Welcome to Paradise!

Welcome to Paradise!

Costa Rica is hot. Almost 30 percent of the country’s surface consists of protected jungle, one of the results of 40 years of consistent reforestation. In addition, Costa Rica abolished its army in 1948 and its energy supply has been 98% renewable for the past 6 years. The United Nations declared Costa Rica the ‘greenest country in the world’ in September 2019.

The Costa Rican jungle is teeming with wildlife. Your Green Circle Experience will offer you unrivalled opportunities to enjoy Costa Rica’s abundant flora and fauna wherever you go. Sloths, monkeys, crocodiles, toucans, turtles…..You can spot them anywhere and the Costa Rican nature is often very accessible. With or without a guide.

Costa Rica truly is a little paradise. And it is our responsibility to keep it that way. If you choose to book our Green Circle Experience, you choose to support that goal. But you also choose to live your dream in an unprecedented way.
Pura Vida!

Kermit Experience

Life’s like a Movie!
We think Kermit the frog was born in Costa Rica. ‘Life’s like a movie’, is one of the most famous quotes from the Muppet Show. That same counts for Costa Rica. Is a true or just a dream? The country’s exuberant nature makes it a true paradise and your perfect travel destination. Nothing’s better than nature itself. Kermit has returned to its natural habitat.

Kermit
Kermit is a great car for couples or small families who like to travel light. It’s amazing design will certainly attract admiring comments from anyone you will meet during your trip. Tip: try to spot all frogs on Kermit during your stay in Costa Rica!

Green Circle Wheels - from 20 December to 3 January 2023

What’s in a name?

Hi everybody, my name is YouCan, because I love Youp and I love Toucans. That actually says it all. I am all about sustainability, sincerity, and being who I am. What you see is what you get. Let me first tell you about toucans. My owners, Renee and Ed, have started the Green Circle Experience back in 2014 as part of their travel agency Edventure Travel. This concept was completely in line with their company slogan, ‘’Find Edventure…. and live your dream!’’. The toucan became our company logo.

The Green Circle Experience is Ed’s way to live his dream. Creating ‘the most sustainable experience in the greenest country in the world’ and sharing this great experience with travellers from all over the world.

Now let me also tell you about Youp. When you don’t rent me, Youp is my favorite passenger. I take him to school, to his therapists and sometimes to doctors and hospitals. Youp was born with cerebral palsy and uses a wheel chair. He is 11 years old and sustainability is as important to him as it is for his parents. He is my biggest fan!

Good cause

Youp also cares for other children with cerebral palsy in Costa Rica, who do not have the same access to health care as him. If you rent me, 10% of your Green Circle Experience fee will be used to support these children and their families, giving them better access to information and the medical assistance they deserve but not always can afford.

By renting me, YouCan, you can make this happen and Renee, Youp and Ed already thank you in advance! By the end of each year, Renee and Ed will send all of you an update on what they achieved with your contributions.

Today you'll head into the mountains to Monteverde which lies at 1400m and is world-famous for its unique cloud forest. In this area you have the best chance to see the beautiful Resplendid Quetzal (Costa Rican most beautiful bird, and unfortunately endangered).

Monteverde was founded in 1951 by the Quakers, a Protestant religious group from Alabama (USA). They started raising dairy cows and making Costa Rica's best cheese under the name Monteverde cheese. The Quakers have not only been great at making cheese, they brought nature conservation in Monteverde to another level.

There is a lot to do in the area. You can go hiking or horseback riding in nature. A real must is to explore the cloud forest from the canopy during one of the most spectacular zipline tours in Costa Rica! Furthermore, the region is also known for its coffee and chocolate.

You'll be staying at Monteverde Inn, enjoy the beautiful views! The hotel also has its own nature reserve where you, as a hotel guest, can hike for free or book an optional night tour. You also have your own kitchen at your disposal.

Rafiki Beach - from 22 to 24 December 2022

The Rafiki Beach Camp is a special destination in the quiet village of Matapalo on the Pacific coast. This coastal village is visited by very few tourists, and you will feel almost alone in this paradise.

You will spend the night at Rafiki beach in a spacious and luxurious sustainable safari tent and in the morning you can choose between a morning dive in the sea or in the pool. You will stay at the safari tent camp on a Bed & Breakfast basis, so you will have your breakfast at your tent, but in the evening you can walk to a local restaurant at the beach or in the village for fresh fish or another local speciality.

The beach camp invites you to relax, but also organizes for example a kayak tour through the mangroves. This is a great way to spot birds, crocodiles, monkeys and other wildlife up close.

In the vicinity you can also make nice trips. At 20 minutes distance lies the surftown Dominical, which besides the good waves for surfers, is also known for the Nauyaca waterfalls and the nature tours at Hacienda Baru. The beautiful beaches at Uvita, and Ojochal, and the national park Marino Ballena are also worth a visit.

Today you will drive further to San Gerardo de Dota. This is a charming village in one of the most beautiful areas of Costa Rica. It lies on Cerro de la Muerte, the mountain range that separates the Caribbean and Pacific coasts.

Just before the highest point (3300m) you descend to the beautiful green valley, carved by the river Savegre, where San Gerardo de Dota is located (2500m). Enjoy the breathtaking views along the way! Here you'll be staying at Dantica Lodge.

In the 1950s, a few Costa Rican families settled in this area. They proved to be fervent advocates of nature conservation and now promote sustainable tourism in the valley and the surrounding cloud forests. It is also one of the few places in Central America where you can still see the quetzal, the sacred bird of the Mayans in Mexico, now the national symbol of Guatemala, and without doubt one of the most extraordinary birds to be seen in the wild in Costa Rica.

It is absolutely worth getting up early and going on a guided tour to look for the quetzal! Besides the Quetzal you are also likely to see woodpeckers, hummingbirds and the small green Toucanet flying by. If you want some more action, you can hike along the river to two waterfalls, or go for a guided hike through the forest to the next village, Providencia de Dota. Ask for more info about this tour if you are interested.

Today you'll drive into the mountains to Turrialba, which means “river of fire” in the Huetar language. Here you stay in the colonial boutique hotel Casa Turire, which is situated on a beautiful estate near a large lake.

The rivers in this area are known for their wild waters; you can do some excellent rafting on the river, Rio Pacuare. You can also go hiking. For example in the reserve La Marta or around Guayabo national monument, where 3000 years ago a pre-Columbian society of 10,000 people lived in the rainforest. You can still find traces of their houses, aqueducts, and roads.

Horse riding, mountain biking, or a coffee tour are also among the possibilities. And a real must is of course a visit to the nearby Irazu volcano!

The next destination is Sarapiquí. In recent years, this region has become increasingly popular with travelers looking for authentic Costa Rica, without mass tourism.

You will be staying at Hacienda La Isla, a stylish sustainable oasis of calm and the very friendly Belgian owner will give you a warm welcome. He loves to take you on a very interesting (and especially delicious!) cocoa tour on their own cocoa plantation. During the tour, you will be taken through the history and learn how chocolate is made. Tasting is of course necessary! If you want to taste even more culture, you can join an indigenous cooking class for dinner.

Lovers of frogs and birds will have a great time at the nearby Frog’s, Heaven. Also, at the hotel, you can go bird watching with a guide. As well, we recommend walking through the private jungle reserve of the Tirimbina nature reserve, or the Selva Verde biological center. At night, you can discover what lives in the jungle in the dark, accompanied by a guide from the hotel.

If you feel like more adventure, then you can go rafting (up to category 4) on the Sarapiquí river. There are also sections where you can take a quiet boat trip in search of howler monkeys and caimans.

To get to the Maquenque Eco Lodge, you must hop on a boat to cross the river. Getting there is part of the adventure. You will arrive in a peaceful oasis amid overwhelming lush nature.
Upon arrival, it is hard to believe that this place actually exists.

This place is known as the most sustainable place in Costa Rica. Whether this is so, you can judge for yourself. In any case, the ranch is completely self-sufficient and carbon-negative (and that is a very positive thing!). During the ranch tour, which is included, you will undoubtedly be inspired, and you will often be amazed. This is a place you will not easily forget!

You stay here on a full board basis. All meals served here are produced organically. If you want to help, you can milk cows, collect eggs, pick herbs or see how soap is made.

On the grounds of the ranch is a beautiful natural swimming pool. You can also join a yoga class twice a day (included)or go hiking. The ranch also organizes an awesome horseback ride through the rainforest and kayak trip on Lake Arenal. During both tours, you have a view of the Arenal volcano if the weather is clear.
