Hotel Grano de Oro, a founding father of the Green Circle, is a sustainable oasis in the hectic city of San Jose. You'll go back in time when staying in this gorgeous colonial building. The hotel was the family home of one of the most renowned entrepreneurial families in Costa Rica. More than 30 years ago, Eldon and Lori, a Canadian couple, bought the property and turned it into the upscale boutique hotel it is today.

The adventure can begin! Upon arrival in Costa Rica you will be met at the airport by a driver and brought to Hotel Grano de Oro close to the center of San José.
For your last night in Costa Rica you will be staying at the lovely luxurious hotel Grano de Oro close to the center of San José.
Our Green Circle member, Hotel Grano de Oro is a sustainable oasis in a hectic city. The colonial building was formerly occupied by one of the most successful entrepreneurial families in Costa Rica. Their fantastic restaurant, arguably the very best in town, is built in the same colonial style and takes you on a journey into the past. The hotel supports a cause to support young mothers to get ahead in life.
There are a number of historic buildings to admire in the city center, including the 1928 Teatro Nacional and the 1917 National Post Office. The covered Mercado Central is also very nice to discover, because of the tropical fruits and special things you can find there. Besides that, there are several museums and nice little parks to sit down and enjoy the busy street life. You can discover it yourself, but you can also participate in a (free) city tour which leaves every day at 9AM & 1PM from the Holiday Inn Aurola. On to the South Caribbean coast, where you'll find the true meaning of Costa Rica's Pura Vida; get ready for a few days of ultimate relaxation in Punta Uva! Selva Bananito is located on the Caribbean side of the country. It's a 45-minute drive to the lodge in the heart of the Caribbean jungle from the small town of Bananito. This gigantic 1200 ha lush green rainforest barely escaped deforestation in the '90s. However, thanks to the determination of Jurgen Stein, the German owner of Selva Bananito lodge, the area has been saved and protected.

Hacienda la Isla is the place where the Green Circle became a reality back in 2014. Based on the Golden Circle from Simon Sinek, 5 leading hotels and tour operator ‘Edventure’ decided to challenge the status quo in sustainable tourism. Hacienda La Isla is tucked away in a lush piece of rainforest not too far from the main road. The lodge boasts colonial grandeur and warm and welcoming hospitality in breathtaking nature.

The next destination is Sarapiquí. In recent years, this region has become increasingly popular with travelers looking for authentic Costa Rica, without mass tourism.
You will be staying at Hacienda La Isla, a stylish sustainable oasis of calm and the very friendly Belgian owner will give you a warm welcome. He loves to take you on a very interesting (and especially delicious!) cocoa tour on their own cocoa plantation. During the tour, you will be taken through the history and learn how chocolate is made. Tasting is of course necessary! If you want to taste even more culture, you can join an indigenous cooking class for dinner.
Lovers of frogs and birds will have a great time at the nearby Frog’s, Heaven. Also, at the hotel, you can go bird watching with a guide. As well, we recommend walking through the private jungle reserve of the Tirimbina nature reserve, or the Selva Verde biological center. At night, you can discover what lives in the jungle in the dark, accompanied by a guide from the hotel.
If you feel like more adventure, then you can go rafting (up to category 4) on the Sarapiquí river. There are also sections where you can take a quiet boat trip in search of howler monkeys and caimans.

Head deeper into nature. On your way to your final destination near Boca Tapada, you will pass the small village of Pital, surrounded by pineapple plantations. To get to the Maquenque Eco Lodge, you must hop on a boat to cross the river. Getting there is part of the adventure. You will arrive in a peaceful oasis amid overwhelming lush nature.
Upon arrival, it is hard to believe that this place actually exists.

The village of El Castillo is nestled at the foot of Costa Rica's most famous volcano, the Arenal. You will stay at Rancho Margot, a beautiful, fully self-sustaining estate at the end of the road. The founders of the Green Circle, Renee and Ed, got married here. That same day, the first seed was sown for the Green Circle, back in 2012. In fact, it took two more years to really get started.
