Red Alert Declared for Poás Volcano: What Travelers Need to Know.

Table of Contents

Costa Rica’s Comisión Nacional de Emergencias (CNE) has issued a Red Alert for Poás Volcano National Park following a sharp increase in volcanic activity over recent weeks. This declaration comes as part of a broader risk management plan aimed at protecting residents, visitors, and ecosystems near one of the country’s most iconic volcanoes.

A Surge in Volcanic Activity Since March

According to the Technical Advisory Committee—which includes experts from OVSICORI-UNA, RSN (ICE-UCR), LAQAT-UNA, and SINAC-MINAE—the Poás Volcano has transitioned into a more active eruptive phase since March 23, 2025.

Recent eruptions have sent gas and ash columns soaring up to 4,500 meters above the crater, while seismic activity, terrain deformation, and acoustic events continue at elevated levels. The volcano’s emissions have notably intensified this week, particularly on Monday, April 21 and again today.

Impact Zones and Alert Levels

As a precaution, the CNE has issued the following alerts:

  • Red AlertPoás Volcano National Park: Highest risk due to direct volcanic activity.
  • Orange AlertGrecia and Sarchí: Moderate to high risk due to ashfall and gas exposure.
  • Yellow AlertAlajuela, Poás, Naranjo, Río Cuarto, and Zarcero: Areas under vigilance.

These regions have experienced significant ashfall, sulfur odors, and environmental stress affecting crops, pastures, and livestock.

Affected Areas and Environmental Concerns

Inside the national park, ash has reached key visitor areas including:

  • The main viewpoint
  • Visitor center
  • Northern and western terraces

Furthermore, a large volume of ash has accumulated west of the crater—especially in the Desagüe River basin, as well as in the Anonos, Gorrión, and Agrio Rivers. This ash buildup creates ideal conditions for dangerous lahars (mud and ash flows) if heavy rains occur near the summit.

What Authorities Are Recommending

The CNE urges all travelers and residents to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid unauthorized areas in and around the park.
  • Follow official updates from OVSICORI, RSN, and CNE.
  • Use protective gear like masks or goggles if exposed to ash.
  • Report ashfall or gas odors to local emergency committees.
  • Prepare emergency kits and stay connected with municipal alert systems.

Park officials and emergency committees are now reviewing contingency resources and coordinating risk management actions throughout affected areas.
