What Does This Mean?

This decision was made following reports from the Technical Advisory Committee (CAT) in Volcanology and Seismology, which includes experts from OVSICORI-UNA, RSN (ICE-UCR), and the LAQAT-UNA laboratory, along with authorities from SINAC-MINAE. They have observed a significant increase in the volcano’s activity, including:

  • Significant and ongoing emission of ash and gases.
  • Frequent energetic eruptions over the preceding weekend, some exceeding the crater’s height.
  • Near-continuous, low-amplitude eruptions, accompanied by nearby seismic activity, ground deformation, and other indicators of an active volcano.

Which Areas Are Affected?

  • ORANGE ALERT:
    • Poás Volcano National Park (with increased security measures).
    • Toro Amarillo district of the Sarchí canton (including the Desagüe and Agrio river basins).
  • GREEN ALERT (remains in place for the following cantons):
    • Alajuela
    • Poás
    • Grecia
    • Sarchí (excluding the Toro Amarillo district)
    • Naranjo
    • Río Cuarto
    • Zarcero

Important Recommendations for Our Travelers:

The CNE has issued the following important recommendations:

  • Rely only on official sources for information: Please refer to reports from OVSICORI, RSN, or the CNE for accurate and up-to-date information.
  • If you are in the Green Alert cantons, please remain vigilant and stay informed about the situation.
  • Strictly adhere to the recommendations of park rangers and competent authorities if you are near the affected areas. Under no circumstances should you attempt to enter unauthorized or high-risk zones.
